Domestic Adoption - Designated/Identified Adoption Program

Designated Adoption Services

Minnesota Adoptive Parents with Birth Parents in Minnesota

MN Adoptive Parent Preparation Service Options:

Consultation
An LSS social worker will consult with you on your specific Designated Adoption situation to determine the needs and to plan for services to meet those needs. We consult with other attorneys and agencies involved to coordinate a plan.

Facilitation
An LSS social worker will be assigned to help to facilitate your adoption plan and to coordinate the services with other professionals involved throughout the entire process.

Adoption (Home) Study
After submitting the completed adoption application, you will be assigned a social worker who will meet with you to educate you on the adoption process and learn about your family for the adoption study document. Close attention is paid to preparing the written adoption study document to meet the expectations of other professionals involved.

Adoption Training Workshop
LSS offers education on the adoption process and general adoption issues. Trainings will be tailored to your adoption situation.

MN Adoptive Parent Post Placement Service Options:

Post Placement Supervision
In Minnesota, families must have supervision of their adoption by an agency for a minimum of three months after placement of the child in their home. LSS will conduct the supervision interviews and submit a recommendation to the court for your adoption finalization.

Adoption Assistance/Subsidy Application
(if applies)

If medical/social risks are appropriate and state requirements have been met, LSS will make application to the state of Minnesota on behalf of the adoptive parents for an adoption subsidy on a high risk or full subsidy level.

Legal Adoption
Families, or an attorney on their behalf, finalize their adoption in the court in their county. LSS provides guidance to the family and supportive documents to the court.

MN Birth Parent Service Options:

Full Services through LSS
Your birth parent may request services from LSS. Your birth parent has a range of comprehensive services available to choose from, including counseling and education. LSS Birth Parent Full Services List and Fees

Full Services through another MN adoption agency
Your birth parent may already be connected with another adoption agency for services and they wish to continue with that agency. LSS will coordinate services with that other agency.

Limited Services
Your birth parent may choose to work only with an attorney for most of their services. LSS will coordinate the adoptive parent services with the birth parent attorney. The birth parent attorney may request voluntary consent to the adoption signing services from LSS. Note that this would be a Direct Placement Adoption and MN adoption statutes require additional legal steps for the adoptive family which requires that the adoptive family also have an attorney. MN Adoptive & Birth Parent Open Relationship Service Options:

Cooperative Agreement Meetings
When both birth parents and adoptive parents are working with LSS, a social worker facilitates meetings between the two families for relationship planning.

Hospital Experience
When both birth parents and adoptive parents are working with LSS, we provide support to birth parents and adoptive parents during the hospital stay of the baby.

Placement
Most adoptive placements occur directly from hospital discharge. When both birth parents and adoptive parents are working with LSS, a social worker is present to support this process.

Direct Contact
Contact is coordinated directly between birth and adoptive parents as agreed to in the adoption process or as it evolves over the years.
