Guatemala Program

Our Guatemala Program is currently on hold. Additionally, the U.S. State Department is advising families to NOT begin an adoption with Guatemala at this time as they are not currently in compliance with the Hague Treaty. You can read the U.S. State Department’s complete statement by clicking here.

LSS offers comprehensive services to prepare, facilitate and support families through all aspects of adopting a child, from the initial education, to the finalization of your child's adoption. We recommend you begin your adoption process by attending an agency information meeting. It is free and without obligation. We can provide prospective parents with information about the Guatemala Program, and our other adoption programs, to answer any questions you may have regarding international adoptions, the process, the costs, anticipated timelines, travel, and more.

The children of Guatemala are cared for by loving foster families in our program. Foster families have a maximum of 2 foster children in their care at a time, so individualized attention is given. The Lutheran Adoption Network (LAN) provides humanitarian aid to Guatemala, including supplies for our foster families.

The Children of Guatemala
The children of Guatemala are generally newborn to 1 year of age at the time of referral. Some toddlers and older children may be available. Both boys and girls are in need of loving homes. Poverty and the lack of cultural and social support are among the most common reasons children are placed for adoption.

Adoption Requirements

  • Parents must be 25-45 years of age for infants.
  • Couples must be married at least one year.
  • Single female applicants accepted.
  • No restrictions on other children in the family.
  • Both parents must take one trip to Guatemala of 4-5 days
